J 06587 − 5558 — A Very Unusual Polarised Radio Source

چکیده
We have found a peculiar radio source J06587−5558 in the field of one of the hottest known clusters of galaxies 1E0657−56. It is slightly extended, highly polarised (54% at 8.8 GHz) and has a very steep spectrum, with α ∼ −1 at 1.3 GHz, steepening to ∼ −1.5 at 8.8 GHz (S ∝ ν). No extragalactic sources are known with such high integrated polarisation, and sources with spectra as steep as this are rare. In this paper, we report the unusual properties of the source J06587−5558 and speculate on its origin and optical identification.

Polarisation of mJy radio sources
Predictions of the number of faint polarised radio sources that can be detected by SKA pathfinder telescopes and the SKA depend on the polarisation properties of radio sources with a total flux density around 1 mJy. Total intensity source counts suggest a transition in the dominant population from AGN to galaxies around this flux density, and the properties of brighter radio sources may not be ...
متن کاملPolarisation in CSS/GPS radio sources
The polarisation properties of the intrinsically small (< 20 kpc) radio sources are briefly discussed. At centimetric and decimetric wavelengths, substantial polarised emission is often detected in quasars and, at a lower level, in radio sources identified with galaxies with projected linear sizes in excess of a few kpc. The projected linear size at which some polarised emission is detected dec...
متن کاملA highly polarised radio jet during the 1998 outburst of the black hole transient XTE J 1748 − 288
XTE J1748-288 is a black hole X-ray transient which went into outburst in 1998 June. The X-ray lightcurves showed canonical morphologies, with minor variations on the “Fast Rise Exponential Decay” profile. The radio source, however, reached an unusually high flux density of over 600 mJy. This high radio flux was accompanied by an exceptional (> 20%) fractional linear polarisation, the variabili...

Supernova 2004dj in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC2403 was detected optically in July 2004. Peaking at a magnitude of 11.2, this is the brightest supernova detected for several years. Here we present Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) observations of this source, made over a four month period, which give a position of R.A. = 073717.044, Dec = +653557. 84 (J2000.0). We also...
متن کاملUnusual high - redshift radio BAL quasar 1624 + 3758
We present observations of the most radio-luminous BAL quasar known, 1624+3758, at redshift z = 3.377. The quasar has several unusual properties: (1) The FeII UV191 1787-˚ A emission line is very prominent. (2) The BAL trough (BALnicity index 2990 kms −1) is detached by 21000 kms −1 and extends to velocity v =-29000 kms −1. There are additional intrinsic absorbers at-1900 and-2800 kms −1. (3) T...
